MDSD June Board Brief

MDSD JUNE BOARD BRIEF MDSD

June 5, 2023

1.  Spring Sports Recognition

AD Connor Kennedy shared how awesome spring sports were. Every team, baseball, softball, golf, and track had above a 3.0 GPA! Great accomplishment especially with all the travel involved. Thank you to all student athletes, coaches and administrators for all the hard work. Congratulations to both Girls and Boys Golf for the 4th place in State and Track for Boys taking 4th in State and Girls taking 3rd. Girl’s track took State Champions in the 4x200. That’s excellent news! Way to go!

2.  Report from the Principals

Spring data continues to show growth across the board and above state averages. Several all time highs were reported ranging through all buildings! Great job teachers!

3.  HRS

Next year begins Level 2. Level 1 was a tremendous success and has been implemented in schools with positive feedback. Instructional support continues to grow, going from 25 contacts to 160 this last semester. The new mentoring program sees success in its first year. Instructional rounds continue to grow where teachers get to observe and learn from the many outstanding teachers we have on staff. Remember Coaches Corner is a resource for all instructional staff.

4.  EPA Electric Bus Grant

Superintendent Pingrey is back to the negotiating table with Harlow’s starting Thursday. We are hopeful that an agreement can be reached to bring electric buses to MDSD.

5.  Salary Schedules

The board agreed on wage increases of 5.25% for all staff. Starting teacher salaries for the 23-24 school year will now come in over $51,000. The teacher scale will now top out at over $82,000. The Salary Schedules will be available on the website.

6.  Budget

Budget approved 2023-2024.

The new Budget formula may actually reduce funding for school districts across the state to include MDSD. The new money to MDSD could increase by 2 million dollars, however, the state anticipates only a $35,000 increase based on the ADA formula. The new funding formula is based on student attendance. MDSD has a better than average attendance of about 90%. The state average for chronic absenteeism is 21%. MDSD comes in at 6.5%. Additionally, there will be a 2.5-3.0% insurance payment to ensure those districts most affected by the new funding model have money to keep the lights on. Student attendance will be ever so important moving forward.

Property Sale

Highway 55 was approved to the highest bidder at $430,000.

Mission/Stibnite St. high bid came in around $550,000. Currently the property is zoned R8 but may have the possibility to be rezoned to R16 which then could potentially bring in about $1.1 million. It was recommended to remove the property from the market and do a sewer feasibility study and then put it back on the market. If the sewer feasibility study shows it can be rezoned to R16 the price it could sell at would increase greatly.
